Modular Kit
Reusable building blocks for environments
Also known as: Modular pieces · Kit-bash · Modular environment
Definition
A modular kit is a curated set of mesh pieces designed to snap together on a grid to build large environments without authoring every wall, floor, and corner uniquely. A typical kit has 8-20 hero pieces (corner, straight wall, doorway, window, archway, floor variations) plus decorative props that combine into infinite layouts. Modular kits are the only practical way to build AAA-scale environments — even an open-world map of 100km² is mostly modular pieces dressed differently.

Author every kit piece on a snapping grid (typical: 100cm x 100cm x 100cm in UE5) with consistent pivot placement — always at the piece's bottom corner, never centered, so pieces align without manual nudging. Share UV space across the whole kit so one trim sheet textures dozens of pieces, keeping texel density consistent between a straight wall and a corner piece. A common beginner mistake is designing pieces that only connect at 90-degree angles, which forces awkward hand-placed geometry at any non-rectangular room. Studios build kits with intentional variation — the same corner piece gets three damage states (clean, cracked, rubble) so repetition reads as environmental storytelling rather than obvious tiling. In Blender or Maya, artists snap using the built-in grid snap tool at the kit's base unit; in UE5, Modeling Mode's grid snapping matches world units directly.
